book review: going beyond the little white book by liz worth

When I did a survey near the end of 2016, one thing you guys OVERWHELMINGLY said you’d like to see on my blog is book reviews! I’ve done some mini ones in the past, but this year I want to dedicate at least one post per month to going in-depth on a specific book. This here’s the first, hooray!

I’ve been reading a lot of pretty woo-woo books in the past few months, but it’s actually been a while since I’ve read one about tarot cover-to-cover (although I’ve been enjoying the Tarot Coloring Book a whole lot!) So when Liz Worth asked me if I’d like to review a copy of her book about tarot, Going Beyond the Little White Book, of course my answer was yes!

Liz’s website describes the book like this: “Many tarot decks come with instructions – little white books that give short descriptions for each card – but they don’t always put tarot into modern-day context, or offer the level of detail you’re looking for. Going Beyond the Little White Book sets out to change all of that.”

I’ve been reading tarot for a couple of years now, but I’m still always looking for new and exciting ways to interpret the cards. I can honestly say that I wish I’d read this book a lot sooner in my tarot journey! Liz talks about each card in detail, as well as explaining how to use them, how to read reversals, and what to do when you’re seriously just stumped by the cards you pull. (It happens.)

For each card, Liz gives its intention, an affirmation that matches this intention, a detailed description of the card’s meaning, and examples of what it might mean in different types of readings: for example, The Fool in a career reading might mean it’s time to make a change in your job, while in a relationship reading it could mean that new love is on the horizon. She also discusses in detail what the cards might mean if they appear in a challenge position, which is EXTREMELY helpful. It can be so confusing, especially for new readers, when a “positive” card appears as a challenge, or when a “negative” card appears as an opportunity. Liz gives a ton of information to help you through blocks like that.

The thing I love most about this book is while Liz dedicates pages to each and every card, she emphasizes that it’s NOT a memorization game. That was what stressed me out the most when I first started reading tarot, that it felt like I would never be able to remember all the different meanings. Liz walks you through what it means to read tarot intuitively and how this might look when you’re actually doing a reading so even if you’re brand new to tarot, you can still read the cards. She also gives you questions to consider for each card that can help guide your intuition along, asking you to focus on the different areas of your life where the card’s influence might be at play. Even if you’ve been reading for a while, this is super helpful – I know I’m not the only one who gets stuck in a reading rut sometimes!

Overall, I really think this book is an amazing resource and one I’ll definitely return to when I’m looking for a new perspective on a certain card. It’s over 300 pages long (seriously PACKED with information) and you can snag yourself a paperback OR digital copy at Liz’s shop, or on Amazon!

Are you reading any good tarot or spiritual/witchy books at the moment? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear what you’re loving lately! 😀

DISCLAIMER: Liz was lovely enough to send me a copy of her book, but all opinions are 100% my own. I aim to always keep it real around here and I’d never share a product with y’all unless I genuinely love and use it myself! <3
