diy crepe paper flowers for beltane

Hi friends! I hope you’re finally getting a little hint of spring, wherever you are. The weather has been pretty nice in Nashville for the most part, but it did snow a little yesterday… yuck! Today we’re back in the 70s and life is pretty good, so I definitely can’t complain too much. If it’s still a frozen wasteland where you are – hang in there! It’ll warm up soon!

Today I’m sharing a tutorial from the Lavender + Lupine School of Magick’s newest course, The Modern Witch’s Guide to Beltane! In case you didn’t know, the L+L school is a joint effort by myself and The Witch of Lupine Hollow. We’ve created a bunch of courses designed to help you either get started on your path or breathe new life into your practice, and this year we’re making one for each Sabbat! If you’d like to enroll in the course, it’s just $15 – and here’s a little taste of what you’ll find there…

***

I love decorating with flowers for Beltane, but I hardly ever have real flowers in the house – they can be pricey, I’m not good at caring for them, and they die so quickly (and then the water gets gross if you leave it for too long!) So instead, I like to make paper flowers to decorate with!

This tutorial will show you how to make watercolor flowers that look pretty realistic (at least, they CAN, if you’re better at crafts than me. But I still think mine turned out okay.) You can use them to decorate your altar, put a few in a vase, or make a pretty floral garland with them to hang in your home. These take some time to make, but the finished result is perfect for this time of year!

(I’m including a photo of the materials I used so you can see what everything looks like, but I actually wouldn’t recommend this brand of watercolors or brushes. The brushes were TERRIBLE and the watercolors… weren’t bad, but weren’t the best. My usual set of watercolors and brushes is packed away so I couldn’t get to them, but you can easily find better brushes and watercolors on Amazon or at Michael’s!)

You will need:

  • 1 roll of white crepe paper
  • Watercolor paints
  • Watercolor paint brushes
  • A cup of water
  • A heat-safe bowl
  • Scissors
  • A glue stick
  • Tape
  • Floral tape
  • Sticks or fake stems (optional)

1. Cut out your petals from the crepe paper. I folded it over itself several times to save myself some time. It doesn’t really matter if all of the petals are the same shape since they get wrinkly later, but you can vary the shapes if you’d like. (If you cut them all out at once but dislike the look of same-size petals, you can also trim them to different shapes and sizes later in the process.)

2. Turn your bowl over and using your paintbrush, brush some water on it towards the top – enough so that your crepe paper will stick to the bowl. Stick a petal or two onto the bowl with part of it on the bottom of the bowl and part on the side (the picture will probably clarify what I mean by this – basically we want the petals to dry in a concave shape, so we’re sticking them to the bowl in the shape we want.)

3. Dip your brush into your watercolor paints and begin painting the petals. I got the paint really watery and let it sort of drip down the petals, then went back in and painted more pigmented splotches. The paint colors will fade as they dry, so if you want bolder petals, be sure to use darker paints. I used reds, oranges, pinks, and yellows for a sunny sunset kind of vibe.

4. Go around the bowl, sticking more petals on and painting them, until you have a significant number of petals. Note that you can keep stacking the petals on top of one another and painting them, but eventually the ones at the bottom will all sort of turn one color so it’s best not to do too many layers. You can have a few different bowls of petals going at once, even if the bowls are different sizes – it’ll just make your flowers more interesting!

5. Now it’s time to dry the petals. I used a hair dryer, but you can also let them air dry. I saw online that you can microwave the bowl and the wet petals for 30-second increments until they’re dry, but I was afraid to put paint in the microwave for some reason… To each their own!

6. Once your petals are dry, it’s time to shape your flowers! Using your glue stick, gently glue your petals together in a circle. This is going to be the base of your flower, so make it bigger for bigger flowers or smaller for tiny blooms.

7. Continue gluing petals in concentric circles until you get to the middle. I think I had about 5 layers of petals on my flower, but you can do as many or as few as you’d like! I scrunched up the petals in the very middle to give it a more natural, messy look.

8. Pinch your flower together on the bottom and tape it, forming a tiny “stem.” It’s okay if your flower gets all scrunched at this stage – we’re going to fluff it out later! I used clear tape to get it to stay together, then went over it again with floral tape. It was just easier that way, but you can just use floral tape if you’d like.

9. Use the floral tape to attach your new flower to the stick or stem you’d like to put it on. I bought stems but ended up not liking the way they looked, so I left my flower off of it and ended up using it for a centerpiece that I’ll be putting on my Beltane altar.

10. Now that it’s attached (or not, as the case may be), un-scrunch your flower and open it back up! Don’t be afraid to fold the paper – real flower petals look messy and bent sometimes.

11. Repeat for as many flowers as you’d like! I’m not going to lie, this is a time-consuming way to make paper flowers – but I love the watercolor look and I think making individual petals makes them look much more real. Have fun!

how to make a flower crown: summer solstice edition

Happy solstice, friends! The summer solstice, also known by other names like the equinox, Litha, Midsummer, and “the longest day of the year,” is a pretty big deal for a lot of people, myself included! I think it’s important to celebrate nature and the changing of the seasons and since I’ve been looking forward to summer all through the cold Chicago winter, I’m super pumped that it’s finally here. (Southern hemisphere friends, I know you’re just getting into winter and… I’m sorry. Maybe this post will help keep you warm?)

There are plenty of things you can do to celebrate the summer solstice! You can spend some time in nature, leave a gift of birdseed or other snacks for the local wildlife (but be careful you don’t attract, like, bears), cook a meal using fresh veggies and herbs, light a candle and spend some time in reflection over the year that’s passed, or do a tarot reading to help you navigate the season ahead (using a fun and summery tarot spread, perhaps? 😉 ). But as a gal who loves any excuse to dress like a woodland creature, I decided to make a flower crown this year to get in the spirit of summer! It was super easy to make and although it looks a little wonky and you can totally see the floral tape in spots, life is all about ~embracing imperfection~ (or whatever, just don’t make fun of my sad little crown, I tried!!)

So I made a little tutorial to show you how to make one, too. I used fake flowers because I wanted mine to last, but you can totally use real flowers with this same technique if you’d like. Learn from my mistakes and become the flower fairy you’ve always wanted to be!

What you’ll need:

– flowers, fake or real

– floral tape

– floral wire

– scissors

– your head

** A note about fake flowers: be sure you pick ones that won’t fall apart too easily! Some of the ones I thought were really pretty came disconnected from the stem really easily, and you need some stem to work with for this. You can use all different kinds of flowers if you want, but I wanted a more uniform look so I picked the same kind in a few different colors. ALSO, be sure you find flowers with a green stem! Preferable one that’s a similar color green to the floral tape and wire so it blends in better, but as long as they’re not wildly different colors you should be fine.

Step 1: Take your floral wire and wrap it around your head where you’d like your crown to go. I wrapped it around twice to make it a little sturdier, and I’d probably recommend that you do it at least twice, too. Make it a little looser than the measurement of your head, since the flowers are going to bulk it up and make it a little bit smaller than the wire on its own!

Step 2: Trim your flowers so that you have a few inches of stem to work with. Not going to lie, the greenery on these made them a pain in the buns to work with. If I do this in the future I’d probably pick a flower with just a plain stem but then get some added greenery to use to fill in gaps if needed. The greenery on these definitely had a cool effect, but made it super hard to tape down!

Step 3: Wrap the entirety of your wire with the floral tape. Floral tape is weird and it seems like it won’t be sticky, but it sticks to itself and works out really well! This step is just to be sure the wires stay together and no sharp bits are sticking out to poke you in the head.

Step 4: Start taping your flowers to the wire with the floral tape. I tried to cover the tape in the little leaves but you can still totally see it, whoops.

Step 5: Work your way around the flower crown, layering flowers as you go so that they cover up the tape as much as possible. You can have fun with how you arrange them – I went with a simple alternating pattern because I wanted mine to be pretty even, but you could go crazy and mix-and-match if you wanted!

Step 6: Once you’ve completed the circle, you can go back in and fill in any gaps with more flowers. Then you’re done! The floral tape isn’t the MOST secure thing in the world, but I wore mine out in the sun all day and it stayed together so that’s a good sign. I’m planning on fixing the loose spots with some good old-fashioned Scotch tape on top of the floral tape.

And here’s what it looked like on!

I’d like to thank the Snapchat “pretty” filter for always making me look bomb. It was super fun to wear and a total stranger complimented me on it, so if YOU like getting compliments from strangers, you should probably make yourself a flower crown. And then send me a picture of it!! I’d love to see what you come up with!

Do you have anything fun planned for the solstice? 🙂 Drink some summery lemonade for me!

let your soul shine: tarot spread for summer

let your soul shine: tarot spread for summer

I told you I had a new spread in the works for summer and here it finally is! Is the crooked sun in the graphic bothering you as much as it’s bothering me? It probably is now that I pointed it out. Believe it or not though, I centered all of that so there wasn’t a whole lot I could do and we’re gonna get past it together. Embrace the imperfections and all that.

I wanted to make a spread that was focused on the self, and on ways we can better ourselves and the world around us. There’s been so much pain and violence in the world lately and it sometimes feels hopeless – like there’s so much bad that we couldn’t possibly fix everything that needs fixing. This spread is certainly not in any way intended to gloss over these tragedies, but at the end of the day all we can control is ourselves and our attitudes. If those aren’t in alignment, we don’t have much hope of creating lasting change and finding peace. This spread is intended to help each individual help themselves so they can, in turn, help others.

I did an example reading for you below because I know sometimes it’s easier to just see it in action, so here goes!

let your soul shine: tarot spread for summer

I used the Linestrider tarot, one of my all-time favorite decks by Siolo Thompson! It’s available on Amazon now because it got picked up by Llewellyn, which is SO exciting because it’s super affordable and accessible to everyone – you can get it here for less than $20! (That’s an affiliate link, but I swear I’m only sharing because I genuinely adore this deck and its artist. I think it’s so important that there are gorgeous, affordable decks on the market, and this one doesn’t have any annoying borders!)

This is just gonna be a super brief reading so you get the gist of it – I usually go more in-depth in my tarot journal (and I can totally do a post on that sometime if you’re interested) but y’all don’t need to be reading through 7 pages of readings to understand the spread. SO, here we go!

1. You as you are now: The Emperor – trying to exert control over my chaotic life!

2. What’s keeping you from being your best: Ten of Swords – Wow, called out!! I’ve had a total victim complex about some of the stuff I’ve been dealing with and it’s keeping me from moving on.

3. How to overcome it: The Star – think positive! There’s always hope, even when things are tough.

4. How you can work toward your goals: Knight of Swords – while this card often means “don’t be too hasty,” I think in this case I DO have to be hasty. Like the Knight, I just have to charge ahead without thinking about what might go wrong!

5: How you can care for yourself: Six of Swords – Put the past behind me. I need to take steps towards moving on, because dwelling on things only makes everything worse.

6: How you can care for others: King of Cups – Quite literally, by caring for them! I can listen when others are having problems and try to give the best advice I can.

7: How you can care for the world: Death – To me this means I need to do everything I can to cause change in the world. It’s not enough to surrender myself to the powers that be – I need to BECOME the Death card, to help overturn the old ideas that are no longer working. I need to take action!

So that’s about it! I hope this spread helps you have your best summer ever. Be sure to come back on Monday for the actual first day of summer – I have a SUPER fun post planned to celebrate the solstice! (hint: it involves flower crowns…)

Do you have any fun plans for the summer? How are you celebrating it?
